India Matters: India's Child Rights Crusader

Nobel Peace Prize winner Kailash Satyarthi is a pioneer in a movement to end child labour in India. He calls himself an ordinary man. But for an ordinary man, the dream he saw was extraordinary. A former electrical engineer, Satyarthi started the Bachpan Bachao Andolan or BBA in 1980 to rescue children from bondage. In the last 34 years, BBA has led thousands of rescue missions for children in factories, mines and circuses. These dramatic raids served in raising awareness about child labour. Although he braved numerous attacks for his relentless campaigns, he never shifted his focus from the basic issue of child rights.
