On the battlefield a soldier, trying to earn a living, risks his life to uphold a nation's honour. Off it, notions of honour perpetuate violent orthodoxy and patriarchy in the worst possible ways. Is there a link? Is honour an ideal we strive to uphold or simply a justification when there are no easy answers for violence? India Matters travels this week with political satirist Sanjay Rajoura to his native village in Bulandshahr, western Uttar Pradesh, to explore freedom, choice and sacrifice in the name of honour.
