India Matters: Single And Not Alone

According to the 2011 Census, there are more than 50 million single women in India - widowed, divorced, separated and older but never married women. They make up 8.6 per cent of the female population of India. Despite being an extremely vulnerable group, this vast section has gone largely unnoticed by the government and the society. But through associations like the National Forum for Single Women's Rights, some single women have successfully organized themselves to support each other. This week's India Matters episode 'Single and not Alone' looks at the lives and problems single women in rural India face.
