An unprecedented conflict rages between farmers and elephants in the rural villages of the Dhenkanal district in Odisha. For over a month, shops have been closing at 5 pm instead of 8 pm. When it gets dark, elephants roam the village streets. When the elephants feel hungry, they go to the fields and eat the paddy which the villagers have been growing for their own families. Farmers say they invest at least Rs 10,000 per acre in their fields, but get a compensation of mere Rs 1000 from the government.
