In December 1992, following the demolition of the Babri Masjid, communal violence was ignited in chosen pockets of Surat, Gujarat's most industrialised city. 150 people were killed in those attacks, most of them Muslims. In January 1993, in seemingly retaliatory attack, a bomb explosion near the diamond market killed a schoolgirl and another at the railway station injured 38 people. In 1995, 11 men were arrested and convicted and two months ago, after 19 long years, every single one of them was acquitted by the Supreme Court.
