Under the Prime Minister's vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047, India is focused on cleaner, greener and more efficient ways to move goods from one place to another. The Cargo Promotion Scheme and the launch of scheduled services to enhance cargo movement on national waterways, three vessels sailed from Kolkata to Guwahati, Patna and Varanasi carrying cement, gypsum and coal. These waterways also have the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Routes and the scheme is expected to incentivise a modal shift of nearly 800 million tonne-kilometres to waterways by 2027.
