India's Language Wars: Identity vs Politics
It's a longstanding and sensitive issue, the language war brewing between Tamil Nadu and the Centre over alleged imposition of Hindi through the National Education Policy (NEP) has expanded into a full fledged letter war too. But the war of words isn't just a Hindi heartland vs Dravidian might battle. The fracas in Karnataka's Belagavi over the staff on a Karnataka interstate bus not speaking Marathi has resulted in a stand-off between neighbours Karnataka and Maharashtra. It clearly is more than just a Hindi versus the rest row. Is it an identity battle or just political posturing?
