Indian athletes started the tournament on a mixed note as MP Jabir qualified for the semifinals in 400m hurdle, while the national record holder in 400m hurdle Dharun Ayyasamy failed to advance. Jabir, however, couldn't improve upon his timing in the semifinals and finished 16th overall among 24 runners. Long jumper M Sreeshankar also failed to reach the final after a disappointing performance. Indian sprinter Dutee Chand's campaign ended in disappointment as she clocked one of her worst timings of the season to exit the women's 100m heats. First good news from the competition came when India's mixed 4x400m relay team comprising Muhammed Anas, VK Vismaya, Jisna Mathew and Tom Nirmal Noah qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after reaching the finals.
