When Irom Sharmila, a 28-year-old Manipuri girl, went on a hunger strike on 5th November 2000 against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act that gave security forces extraordinary powers to tackle militancy in the state, few took her seriously. Now, Irom Sharmila, 44, has become an iconic warrior in the fight against AFSPA. But will that fight lose steam because she has broken her 16 year fast and decided to fight for the repeal of AFSPA politically? The breaking of her fast has divided Manipur society.
