Is Any Future Left for the Left in India?
As Sitaram Yechury takes over as the new General Secretary of the CPI(M), we debate whether the relatively younger "pragmatic" leader can revive the Left in India. Over the last decade, the Left parties have been decimated in West Bengal and Kerala. Their seat share in Lok Sabha is less than two per cent. Why has the Left faced this fate? Is it because of its policies or the rise of the Right Wing; or both? Is it also because the CPI(M) has less than seven per cent youth members in a country which is being driven by its over 50 per cent youth population?
