Is it time to scrap NREGA?
It's the government's flagship scheme to provide guaranteed work to the poor, on a minimum 100 days in a year, but the NREGA has been mired in corruption and problems of implementation. The new Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh has now roped in the government's auditor, the CAG to devise special audits and tougher checks in states. But do the NREGA's problems go beyond corruption, and flawed delivery mechanisms? Are there fundamental flaws in the scheme itself? We discuss.
