On August 1, President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to the new Triple Talaq law, signing it into an Act. This makes instant Triple Talaq a criminal offence, with a 3-year jail term for the husband. But just within days of the new law coming into effect, comes a shocking report from Uttar Pradesh's Shravasti district, where a 22-year-old girl had to pay with her life for trying to report her husband to the police for divorcing her over the phone. The girl was allegedly burnt to death by the husband and his family, and her 5-year old daughter an eyewitness to the incident. Shockingly, cops at the local police station had earlier brokered a compromise between the couple instead of acting in accordance with the law.
