An education report focused on rural India- the latest ASER report card is a cause of worry. Over half of class 8 students cannot do simple division of 3 digits by one digit. This is a marginal decline as compared to the previous year. Furthermore, the report finds that even in simple reading, over a quarter of class 8 students cannot even read class 2 books. However, there were some improvements. For instance, there has been a jump of 3.5 per cent in the number of students enrolled in government schools from 2016 to 2018. Also, since 2010, the number of cable girls' toilets have doubled in 2018. Tonight on Versus, we discuss whether India's learning deficit is worsening and is there a need to remodel the Indian education system.
