Jagmeet Singh's Defeat, Carney's Win Brings Hope For Stronger India-Canada Ties: Ex Envoy To Canada

Former Ambassador to Canada, Vikas Swarup on Tuesday was optimistic outlook about better India-Canada relations after Mark Carney's Liberal Party won the elections. Swarup said that one of the significant changes in the Canadian political landscape was the loss of Jagmeet Singh's seat in the recent election. Singh, leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP), had been a prominent figure who had drawn criticism for his past association with Khalistani separatist elements. According to Swarup, Singh's defeat and subsequent announcement that he would step down as party leader marked a "silver lining" for India, as it could lessen the influence of Khalistani sympathizers in Canada's political sphere.
