Jammu And Kashmir Stripped Of Statehood: The Myth Of Special Status
It is now official. Jammu and Kashmir has been stripped of statehood and lost its special status. As always, a debate marking the huge shift was high on emotion but somewhat relaxed with the facts. At the core of the BJP's argument was that a historic wrong had been remedied; special status to Jammu and Kashmir was seen as discriminatory. Tonight on Reality Check we ask, is the BJP guilty of double standards? The parallels to Kashmir are closest in the case of Nagaland and Mizoram where the law says 'no act of Parliament shall apply to these states in respect of religious or social practices customary law and procedure, administration of civil and criminal justice and ownership and transfer of land and its resources' unless sanctioned by their assemblies. In other words, outsiders cannot buy land in these 2 states; in addition, Himachal Pradesh has its own land reforms act which bars outsiders from buying land.
