The bill to split Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories cruised through Lok Sabha today, with some opposition parties walking out, bringing down the majority mark, and others siding with the government. Having already been passed in the Rajya Sabha, the bill now awaits Presidential assent before becoming an Act. After it becomes an Act, Jammu and Kashmir will cease to be a state and become two union territories with two Lieutenant Governors. Ladakh will be a Union Territory without a legislature and Jammu and Kashmir will have a legislature.
