The World Bank Ease of Doing Business rankings, where India jumped a huge 30 ranks, has created a political buzz with the opposition Congress alleging 'fixing' by the government. The government on the other hand says that it is a result of three years of perseverance towards reform. Junaid Ahmad, World Bank Country Director for India, speaking to NDTV said that he had predicted India's jump last year and these results don't surprise him. Mr Ahmad says that he takes immense pride in this evidence based report, and said, he would not react to politics, however the idea behind this report is to generate a debate. Mr Ahmad elaborated that the report doesn't take account macro-economic decisions specific to India like the GST or notes ban. He says he believes that the current government is on course. He went to add that if India can focus on reforms in contracts system and registration of property, it will boost the government's efforts to meet PM's ambitious target of breaking into the Top 50 rankings.
