Sara ji, a nomad who lives in one of the villages surrounding the Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, is speaking on behalf of an entire community that depends on tourists to sustain their livelihood. The terrorist attack in the meadow on Tuesday has led to an exodus of tourists from the area, dealing a severe blow to local businesses.
Mostly engaged in agriculture and livestock rearing, these nomads sold their agricultural crops and dairy products to the eateries in the area to make a living. In addition, they also made money by doing errands for tourists. The terrorist attack earlier this week has left them high and dry, as the area, now vacated by tourists, has cut off their only source of livelihood.
