The special status to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 of the Constitution has been removed by a presidential order that would come into force "at once", Home Minister Amit Shah said in parliament today, announcing the most far-reaching move on the state in nearly seven decades. There has also been a decision to bifurcate the state, so Jammu and Kashmir will be a Union Territory and have an assembly headed by a Lt Governor. Ladakh will also be a Union Territory but one without an assembly.
