January 19th is marked as the day to remember the exodus of the Kashmiri Pandits from their homeland in the Valley. Although only a small 5-7 per cent of the population in the region, the history and culture of Kashmir is inextricably linked to the Pandits. When violence broke out in 1989 and in subsequent years, the Kashmiri Pandits were forced out of the valley. Those who try to return often have a grim story to tell.
