The 21-day lockdown led to the exodus of migrant labourers who have a significant contribution in the agricultural and trade sector of Punjab. Hundreds of labourers walked on foot to reach their native state, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a 21-day lockdown to check the spread of the novel coronavirus. Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh appealed the traders to open the industries and retain the labourers so that they can also help farmers later during the harvesting season. The owners of industrial units and brick kilns can commence production if they have enough space to accommodate and feed migrant labourers, Captain Singh said in a statement.
