At the launch of Shashi Tharoor's "The Battle of Belonging" followed by a discussion between Mr Tharoor and Christophe Jaffrelot about what nationalism really means, the Congress MP talks about the idea of India our freedom fighters had, a nation for all its citizens, where everyone is equal. But today, what we're seeing is an ethnic nationalism, Hindutva that is exclusionary. Civic nationalism is being undermined by political practise. Professor Jaffrelot says the saffron wave is a counter revolution and a reaction to the rise of backward caste leaders in the 1980s. He says the whole world is facing a decline of universalistic values and majoritarianism is being seen across the globe.
