After 200 nilgai or blue bulls were shot in Bihar in the last six days, union minister Maneka Gandhi, famous for her activism in animal rights, has hit out against her government's environment ministry saying it's been gripped with a 'lust to kill'. Last year, the Environment Ministry agreed to allow the killing wild animals in man-animal conflict zones on certain conditions for a specific time period. But Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar says that it's the Centre's prerogative to help out if farmer's lives in states are being compromised by acts of 'nuisance' animals or vermin. While forest management across the country is not yet at a desirable level, is killing 'vermin' the only way out?
