Between 1 and 2 AM on 29th January, the religious chants at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj were replaced by the sirens of ambulances and police vehicles. A stampede broke out at the Mela ahead of Mauni Amavasya as crores gathered to take an 'Amrit Snan'. The government of Uttar Pradesh has said that at least 30 people have died and dozens more have been injured.
