It's not the answer the government was hoping for. Mamata Banerjee told the Prime Minister today that her party cannot support the government on its decision to allow upto 51% foreign ownership of multi-brand retail stores. The West Bengal Chief Minister, who has 18 Lok Sabha MPs, said she cannot back a policy that affects the interests of farmers. "He also asked me to think about FDI and discuss it with my party. We can discuss in the party. But I said on this issue I cannot give my support because our opposition to FDI is there in our manifesto. I have to look after the interests of the small farmer," said Ms Banerjee.
