It was arguably the powerful Bellary mining lobby that contributed to the fall of the coalition government in Karnataka and early elections in the state. Allegations made by BJP iron-ore mine owners against the then chief minister, H D Kumaraswamy, added to the tension between the coalition partners. And millionaire mine owners are found in each of the major parties in the district - often calling the shots.
