The All India Muslim Personal Law Board said today that the freedom of religious minorities was being violated by a public questionnaire that has asked for feedback on ending the practice of triple talaq and the eventual introduction of a uniform civil code. The questionnaire which is on all personal laws, has been placed online by the National Law Commission, which advises the government on legal reform, and anyone can respond to it in the next 45 days. The Muslim body says it will boycott the questionnaire, claiming the law commission is working as "an agent of the government" instead of as an independent body. The Muslim Body's response comes days after the government for the first time officially opposed triple talaq in an affidavit to the Supreme Court, calling it misplaced in a secular country.
