The recent phenomenon of writers, artists and scientists returning national awards in protest against what they call growing intolerance in the country has led to a spiraling debate between them and those from their own fraternities who have opposed this form of protest, for reasons ranging from a simple difference of opinion to sharp attacks calling them hypocrites and anti-national. The BJP has accused these eminent Indians of manufacturing dissent, calling the protests sponsored by their political opponents, the Congress and others.
