Amid reports of black fungal infections in Covid patients, AIIMS director Dr Randeep Guleria said because of Covid, immunity comes down and one is more prone to secondary bacterial and fungal infections or opportunistic infections. "Some of the drugs that we give, at levels which are not justified, pre-disposes (patients) to these fungal infections. If we are getting very high-dose steroids for a long time, then your immunity is low and if you have diabetes and certain other conditions, that further decrease your immune system... then you are prone to getting a secondary infection which could be a fungal infection," he said.
