In a massive disappointment for the LGBTQIA+ community, the Supreme Court of India declined to legalise same-sex marriage, instead handing that power over to the Parliament in the form of asking the government to set up a panel to consider granting the community more legal rights. While the court made strong observations, with Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud championing the rights of queer couples in particular, many in the queer community felt 'let down' and disappointed at what they called a 'historic opportunity' missed.
