Farmers continue to burn farm waste in Punjab, despite the government claiming a reduction in farm fires over the years. The Punjab government has launched extensive awareness campaigns and in turn faces hostile farm unions. Yet, it has not stopped farmers from burning stubble who insist that they should be given cash-based support to manage the stubble. Their views were echoed by Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh. Farmers, however, add that merely providing cash support won't end the stubble burning problem. Rather, they also need an effective mechanism that can store the approximately 20 million tonnes of paddy which is produced in every season in Punjab.
