Author and columnist Chetan Bhagat clarifies why he called the NRC an expensive, gargantuan and pointless exercise in a recent article. Mr Bhagat says NRC is secular but a harassment for all, not just Muslims. He says the fear of NRC is accentuated because of the messenger - it's different because Home Minister Amit Shah is asking for details. "If it was another government, if there was trust maybe NRC would be easier to do. But this government causes a lot of anxiety, especially in the minority community." Mr Bhagat also asks if 5-10 per cent of the population is found to be illegal - that's 6-12 crore people - a serious drain on resources. He suggests instead the government should just grow the economy faster.
