On a festive Sunday, India celebrates Makar Sankranti, Pongal
In a triple celebration, people across the country are celebrating the festivals of Makar Sankranti, Pongal and Bihu. While Sankranti marks the end of winters and is celebrated with much pomp in southern and eastern India, Pongal is observed over a period of three days in Tamil Nadu. Bihu, meanwhile, is ushered in with great fervour in Assam.
