Parties stay clear of reservation debate
Former Prime Minister VP Singh's proposal for reservations - Mandal I - in 1990 resulted in nationwide protests, immolations by anti-quota protestors and quick political dividends for parties. However, 15 years later, as the central government decides to implement 27 per cent reservation for OBCs in central education institutions by June 2007, mainstream political parties are not supporting any anti-quota cries.
