Muhammad Yunus On India | Politicians From Northeast React To MD Yunus’s Comment

The Bangladesh Interim Government’s Chief Advisor Md. Yunus’s comments on the northeast have led to terse reactions from Indian politicians from the northeast. The Chittagong region in Bangladesh, which has a tumultuous history, is now part of the suggestions by leaders from the northeast to secure India’s interests strategically, especially after Md Yunus’s comments. Md Yunus had invited China to take part in what he felt could be a massive opportunity to expand the Chinese economy and described Bangladesh as the "only guardian of the ocean" in the region as India’s northeastern states are landlocked. The Chittagong Port is strategically important for India and Bangladesh had issued a Permanent Standing Order for the operationalisation of the Chittagong port for the transit of Indian goods. The Maitree Setu (Friendship Bridge) opened on March 9, 2021, connects Sabroom in India with Ramgarh of Bangladesh with Sabroom being less than 100km away from Chittagong Port.
