As the 18th Lok Sabha session begins, a battle for the post of Speaker of the House has broken out between the NDA, INDIA bloc. The Lok Sabha will witness an election for the first time for the Speaker's post as the NDA and Opposition failed to achieve consensus. Notably, the Lok Sabha Speaker, Dy Speaker have been elected by consensus between the ruling party and the Opposition since the Independence. While the INDIA bloc has fielded Congress MP K Suresh for the post, BJP MP Om Birla will defend the chair. BJP MP Om Birla and Congress MP K Suresh filed their nominations for the post earlier in the day. Lok Sabha Speaker candidate K Suresh said that consensus failed because the NDA refused to give the Deputy Speaker post to the Opposition. The election will be conducted on June 26 as President Murmu is scheduled to address a joint sitting of both houses on June 27. Earlier, INDIA bloc leaders protested both inside and outside over the appointment of pro-tem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab.
