Political suicide is one way of looking at the Congress in UP. The other way is to argue that the Congress has accepted the logic of regional parties. Repeated alliances with the Samajwadi Party has ensured that it will keep its hand alive in the state. So much so that this time when Mulayam is weaker under the assault of the BSP and the fragmentation of the Muslim vote, at least the Congress is now in a position to act a little tough.
