22 years ago when inclusion was an unheard of concept, a Secunderabad-based NGO, Swayamkrushi, had begun to put it into practice. It set up its first group home for eight differently-abled women. Women who would live together as a family. It was believed that they could lead as normal a life as possible at home and in their community if they were trained. Sutapa Deb continues the focus on assisted independent living models for the intellectually impaired in our country.
