Changes to a landmark bill that gave people the right to know about the decisions of their government was debated quickly in the Lok Sabha and passed - all in a matter of a few hours. The opposition and civil rights activists have been up in arms over the provisions as the changes virtually put the central government in control of issues like tenure and pay of information commissioners. They feel that the spirit of the Act is gone as the government will be at the liberty to arm twist these information commissioners. Is this really a gag order or an effort to streamline the RTI Act?
