A research paper titled 'Democratic Backsliding in the World's Largest Democracy' by Ashoka University faculty member Sabyasachi Das is at the centre of a new political controversy with leaders from both Congress and BJP issuing sharp responses. The paper explored the idea of vote manipulation by the BJP in the 2019 general elections when it won 303 out of 543 seats. Ashoka University has distanced itself from the paper even as many called this an attack on academic freedom while others pointed to problems in the hypothesis. Political commentator Amitabh Tiwari helps us make sense of the controversy over the findings.
