The much talked about Triple Talaq bill that criminalises instant talaq and recommends a three year jail sentence was today passed by the Lok Sabha. All opposition amendments were defeated and the bill is now heading for the Rajya Sabha. The government claimed that today was a historic day, for the rights of Muslim women, but many in the Muslim community didn't agree. The aspects around criminalisation are being hotly debated. Asaduddin Owaisi's party, the AIMIM for example saying that the bill would be misused to jail Muslim men. The Congress party's stance was interesting. It wanted the bill to be sent to a standing committee, but it did end up supporting the bill, which is an indicator of the fact that the Congress may be trying to change its traditional branding.
