Reality Check: Minimum Support, Maximum Demand

Despite a major U-turn by the government on farm laws and the Prime Minister's address on TV to announce the rollback, the farmers' agitation is on the boil. A massive mahapanchayat was held in Lucknow today, where farmers raised the stakes, pressing for making the government support price a legal right, an earlier demand, now being reiterated with renewed vigour. The government has so far not agreed to this, saying that farmers anyway get the support price. While there is enough evidence to suggest that farmers, in fact, struggle to get the support price, making MSP a legal right may be a complex business.
