In an era where there seems to be a growing disconnect between people in urban areas and the farmers who produce the food that they eat, a Fairtrade weekend was held in Bengaluru to remind city folk of those who help to keep them alive. Art, film, photography and discussion was used to get the city dwellers to think about farmers - and the challenges that they face. Fairtrade is a label that empowers farmers and pays them a better price for what they produce and also invests part of the proceeds back into the farming community. Living in the city, it is easy to forget where all this food comes from. That the problems and challenges of farmers in the rural areas are our problems too. There is a deep connection that is often forgotten and the Fairtrade weekend was an attempt to remind those living in this city of that connection.
