Former disinvestment secretary D K Mittal says that before effecting strategic stake sales, the government should focus on increasing efficiency at these PSUs. He also says that the practice of selling capital assets to fund revenue deficits is unsound and should not happen. A clear plan and focus on the end-result is necessary before embarking on this process. Prithvi Haldea of Prime Database believes that divesting stake in PSUs can be a big way for deepening the capital market itself. His advice - offer big discounts to retail investors in these sales and bring them into the marketplace.
