The Bombay High Court recently criticised a sessions court for making unwarranted and stereotypical observations against transgender persons while rejecting a bail plea of a trans woman. The sessions court at Pandharpur had commented that it was "well known" that transgender persons "harass" people and that trans persons were getting "bolder, rowdier and nastier." Now these unfortunate comments were condemned by Justice Madhav Jamdar of the Bombay High Court who said that such remarks were uncalled for, and said they should not have been recorded. CJI DY Chandrachud has repeatedly talked about equal treatment to all, and last year, we celebrated new handbooks for legal professionals for gender sensitivity, using non-discriminatory language and behaviour. How far are we on the road to achieving that?
