Located in old Amritsar, the Harmandir Sahib or the Darbar Sahib, is the holiest shrine of the Sikh religion. Amritsarovar, the pool of holy water, which surrounds the temple gives the place its name 'Amritsar'. The temple’s history is much debated with some saying that Guru Arjan laid the foundation of the temple, and others claiming he asked a Muslim saint to do so.
