Sharechat, one of India's largest social media platforms with 45 million users each month, has removed more than 54,000 accounts in its effort to combat fake news. This is crucial because Sharechat has a huge following in Tier 2 and 3 cities, is operable in 14 Indian languages but not English. The platform removed close to 5 lakh pieces of content for spreading fake news, and 54,000 accounts were taken down. We discuss why the move is significant, especially as the country is in the middle of the 2019 general election.
