Several thousand coronavirus patients in the country have contracted Mucormycosis, a deadly and aggressive fungal infection, compounding the country's troubles as it reels from the Covid pandemic. As black fungus cases spike, pharmacies are running out of the antifungal drug Amphotericin. The Union Health Ministry has given license to five more manufacturers to make Amphotericin-B. Dharmesh Shah, Chairman of BDR Pharma (maker of Amphotericin), tells NDTV: "...until the end of June we should be able to get some sizeable quantity into the market. We need to understand it is a complex molecule and the manufacturing cycle is almost 25 days, it is not something that you can churn out in large volumes in the shortest possible time. We are dealing with all aspects to see how we can gather maximum raw materials and step up the production".
