On January 17, 2016, Rohith Vemula, a 26-year-old Dalit scholar of Hyderabad University hanged himself after he was suspend on orders of the Education Ministry for being casteist, extremist and anti-national. Protests erupted on campuses across the country, and overnight Rohith Vemula was transformed into an icon of Dalit resistance. Since then his mother Radhika has been keeping her son's memory alive. She has spent the last year travelling across the country, demanding justice for her son and challenging the official reasons for his death, even as the family struggles to make a living.
