Reality Check: Who Is The Real Assamese?

While the rest of the country prepares to celebrate the New Year, there are many in Assam who are cowering. They are cowering because Dec 31 is the deadline for the National Register of Citizens to be published. For first time after 1951, the government will identity who is a citizen and who is an illegal migrant, a contentious issue itself. However it becomes even more complex with the promise BJP has made. The ruling party has promised that Hindus from Bangladesh who have come will not be sent back. This is not acceptable to local groups like the All Assam Students Union and many others who ask why discriminate on the basis of religion?
